PREHISTORIC WORLDS: Backyard Discoveries

"Prehistoric Worlds - Backyard Discoveries" portrays amazing stories of how amateurs of all ages have uncovered some of the most archaeologically significant finds of our time BRINGS MAMMOTH FINDS TO LIGHT, PORTRAYS AMAZING STORIES OF AMATEUR FINDS, and highlights the incredible saga of the Jarkov mammoth.

In October 1999, the world watched, spellbound, as a team of scientists in a location 477 miles north of the Arctic Circle chiseled out a 23-ton block of permafrost that contained the remains of a 20,000-year-old woolly mammoth. The Jarkovs, members of Siberia's indigenous people, the Dolgans, had found the creature's exposed tusks - the tip of the iceberg, so to speak - virtually in their own back yard. Although many who live in warmer climes might never expect to discover such finds in their own neighborhoods, an exciting new exhibit shows how many people have done just that.
